James Poynton

Chief Operating Officer

As the Chief Operating Officer, James works with the Foundation’s Trustees and Institute Director to ensure that a clear vision and research strategy exist for the continued development and growth of the Charity and Institute. He oversees long-term strategic capital expenditure planning, investment strategy, property portfolio, risk management, communications, people culture, and infrastructure delivery. He also coordinates investment from various philanthropic sources and supports successful research grant funding.

James joined the Foundation in 2024, following an 18-year career in the Royal Air Force, which involved operational and strategic leadership roles in the UK, the US and the Middle East. He worked across numerous Government departments, specialising in international relations and commercial and financial management. Experienced in leading multifaceted professional service functions, he was head of people and operations for the UK’s highest readiness fast-jet unit.
